There are many things that attract our attention in the society. It is hard for us to commit to a single work or a partner. However, commitment is an important Christian character. In the bible, Ruth did a beautiful thing for her mother-in-law. She shows her commitment to stay with her “Where you go I will go and where you stay I will stay….” (Ruth 1: 16)
Lately, my commitment to my church has been seriously challenged. I was not content with the church’s operation and my fellowship-mates that I wanted to leave and go to other churches. Coincidently, I attended to a church in which I met people who offered me much spiritual support. And I declared in my heart that this is the church god had prepared for me!
However, God gave me a mother church, and I have a commitment for it. I made many rationalizations about how I prefer English service but the English service in LW doesn’t suit me because the English sermon is targeted to teenagers. However, this rationalization doesn’t change the fact that I lack commitment.
In the past, I only demanded Living Word to suit my personal needs and my fellowship-mates to support me spiritually. Instead of criticizing what our church lacks, I should focus on how I could help out in those areas. I should put my church’s need ahead of my own.
Surely God placed me in a certain church for a purpose. I guess the biggest treasures of attending LW are meeting my very knowledgeable and respectable pastor Michael and supportive and trust-worthy friend Joe at Living Word.
Today I was inspired by 1 Corinthians 13, the famous chapter on love. Love is patient. Love is kind. It taught me to be patience with the slow growth of my church and to show kindness actively to my fellowship-mates regardless of how they treat me. (They are very very kind to me)
Commitment never meant to be easy. We could all anticipate times of challenge in which we are attracted by other things. However, a commitment is a commitment in which we have to keep ‘till the due date. I have the freedom to join other churches’ activity but I will make attending the services at living Word to be my priority
Having set my mind upon committing to something, it helps me to commit to other areas of life as well, like school, friends, family etc. Thank you, God, for giving me this “trouble” in which I could think carefully and learn the real meaning of commitment. Lord, may you continue to change me so that I can become a faithful servant of yours. Amen.
